Treatment for varicose ulcers

In Germany alone, there are probably about 100,000 people with an ulcus cruris (leg or varicose ulcer). Many of them could be helped both simply and effectively. The ulcus cruris generally has a venous origin, and in some cases an arterial basis. In rare cases, there may be both arterial and venous grounds for its development.

After a precise clarification of the cause by means of ultrasound (Duplex sonography) and perhaps also further simple examinations, the experienced vascular surgeon can determine a therapeutic schedule:

  • In the event of a varicose ulcer with venous origin, the obstruction in the veins involved must be eliminated surgically, sometimes with foam sclerotherapy. This is then followed by (or sometimes even simultaneously performed together with) a "shaving" of the varicose ulcer (the operative desiccation of the surface) and the concomitant covering of the defect with endogenous skin
  • In the event of a varicose ulcer with arterial origin, the arterial circulation must be restored first of all: this is usually achieved through the use of modern catheter procedures or, if necessary, by means of bypass surgery. Afterwards, the "shaving" is carried out once again, as well as the covering of the defect
  • In the event of the very rare mixed varicose ulcer, the therapy is performed on both the venous and the arterial regions
Ulcer of the leg (ulcus cruris or varicose ulcer) in a 52-year-old waitress with massive varicose veins, which led to this development. In this patient, the varicose ulcer could be eliminated successfully in a single surgical procedure: the veins were treated by means of a radiofrequency catheter, the ulcer was removed using a special medical plane and simultaneously closed with skin from the patient\'s thigh.

In very many cases, the varicose ulcer (even if it has already existed for more than 20 years) is purely of a venous nature and can generally be closed long-term using relatively simple measures. In this way, the frequent pain and suffering can be brought to a conclusion.

We have excellent (and a great deal of) experience with the treatment of varicose ulcers, even in cases where the ulcer was already very old. Through the combination of different methods, such as the radiofrequency therapy (VNUS Closure), the endoscopic venous therapy, microfoam sclerosation, the shaving off of the ulcer bed using a "dermatome" (a kind of medical precision plane) and the simultaneous covering of the ulcer with a split skin graft from the same patient, we offer a therapeutic combination which is quite unique in Europe. Our rate of success is exceptionally high and, for a purely venous ulcer, is over 75%.

We perform these treatments in the hospital. In very many cases the entire cost is covered by the insurance company - even by statutory health insurance: Please talk to us, or contact us by email, so that we can clarify everything precisely for you before your treatment!
